FAQs

WhAT ROPE DO YOU TIE WITH AND WHERE IS IT FROM?

We have a few preferences for our personal rope collection, what we use, why and where it is from. We currently have an array of lengths of single-ply 6mm natural jute which is a blend of Ogawa and Nawaya from Anatomie Studio’s Shibari Store and lush Clara Premium Jute from Esinem Rope - It’s strong but lightweight making it great to handle and feels amazing from both a rigging and bunny perspective. We also own JinzouNawa synthetic jute from Esinem Rope which we like to use for our uplines when suspending people. We feel we’re making our rope journey an exciting, sensual and aesthetically stunning experience whilst most importantly, keeping it as safe as it can possibly be.

In an Ultra Violet atmosphere we use the beautiful
Knot Head Nylon’s 6mm single braid UV 100% nylon rope - It’s the incredibly soft, strong, and definitely the most vibrant coloured rope which glows like none other we’ve ever come across before!

There are so many varieties out there from amazing suppliers, ask around, try different types of ropes out before buying any, see what works for you and your needs - we’ll post a blog soon about the pros and cons about different ropes, watch this space!

Do I NEED TO BRING MY OWN ROPE TO A JAM OR WORKSHOP?

If you’re just starting out in the world of Shibari and don’t have anything yet, we recommend not rushing into buying anything just yet as it’s a rather expensive hobby and you want to be buying the perfect product! We have a variety of communal rope we can lend you to practice with at The Shibari Lounge which consists of Jute, Hemp, Cotton and Nylon rope that you can get a feel for, explore and see what you enjoy the sensation of.

We will always say “start as you mean to go on” when it comes to learning so you can really gauge your tension and wraps when tying and how to handle the flow of the rope. However, what type of rope you end up using will most probably also completely depend on your intentions- the art of shibari and doing suspensions for example can have different requirements to dabbling in some bedroom bondage safely and comfortably.

In time, and as the workshops continue and may increase in difficulty, we’re more likely to say that you’ll need you own rope - especially so you can practice at home and do some more of the intimate ties.

Help! What do I wear to a rope jam at the shibari lounge?

Any thing you are comfortable in! Majority of people wear shorts and a t-shit, a body suit, gym/yoga attire, lingerie. We don’t have a dress code when it comes to these events but just bare in mind it is a small venue so complete nudity may make some feel uncomfortable and jeans, for example, or similar clothing isn’t easy to be tied in. Think of something that is easy to move in and the tighter fitting the clothing the better it is from a riggers perspective.
